An Archipelago in the Andaman – Is an island getaway just what you need?
The Andaman Sea is known for its warm, crystal waters and its smattering of islands. Just off Thailand’s border lies Langkawi – an archipelago of no less than 99 Malaysian islands.
The beaches are drenched in white sands with a backdrop of dense, tropical rainforests making for the perfect relaxed setting. But don’t worry, if you’re after adventures, you’ll find Langkawi is adrenaline-infused, too.
The greatest Langkawi adventure begins at the Oriental Village. Organize your vacation with the Langkawi Development Authority and you’ll get to ascend through the rainforest aboard the steepest cable car in the world. It’s a location made just for Instagram. Everywhere you look – over the dense, jade-colored forest and out into wide-open valleys – is another photo op. And, you can see all the way to Thailand.
Then there’s the Sky Bridge. It’s a suspension of crescent-shaped steel and glass. The views are incredible, especially the ones just below your feet.
Once you get your feet back on solid ground, head to the SkyDome where you’ll get to observe Langkawi and planet Earth in dramatic fashion. And finally, SkyRex is the ultimate 3-D adventure in which you’ll get to explore as though you were walking with the dinosaurs.
History buffs will enjoy Langkawi’s old-town past. A local adventure tourism company, Dev’s, recreates Langkawi’s vivid history with a traditional welcome at a Malaysian home where you’ll get to tour the family’s rice paddy fields. Listen as the cicadas – and your guide – tell you all about the battle of the food chain in this environment.
You’ll then get to help make a traditional Malaysian dinner. You’ll help your hosts chop chicken, slice up some mangos, and join it all together with some roti and spices. You’ll get to listen in as the family details their day’s experience at the market while they were shopping for tonight’s ingredients. Chats will continue as you sit down to eat the meal you just helped prepare – your hosts might speak of things such as the rice and rainy seasons not being as dependable as they once were, and how their crops now depend on manmade irrigation systems.
A mix of adventure, history, and agricultural lessons. Are you ready to discover Langkawi?
